The conference on March 18th, 2020 will aim at:

Promoting a technical and academic discussion on innovative opportunities that can support a “Just Transition” process in mining regions;

Presenting and discussing “Just Transition” best practices from Germany, and identifying tools and solutions that are adaptable to the Minas Gerais context;

Encouraging the development of a bilateral cooperation agenda that can lead the implementation of a “Just Transition” process in Minas Gerais.

Welcoming remarks; Presentation of the Bilateral Initiative; and Introduction of the forthcoming panels

9h30 – 11h00:

PANEL I: MODELS OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, PLANNING, STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT AND TERRITORIAL GOVERNANCE FOR A JUST TRANSITION

Overview of the mining-based economy of the state of Minas Gerais and the need to identify a more sustainable development model;

Presentation of the German “Just Transition” cases from the Ruhr Valley and Lausitz region, focusing on the experiences of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) as a long-term planning tool and the importance of creating a participatory territorial governance platform with diverse stakeholders (Multistakeholder Governance Model).

PANEL II: RECOVERY AND VALORIZATION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL, FOREST, CULTURAL AND TOURIST HERITAGE

Presentation of sustainable territorial development tools such as Sustainable Landscape and Cultural Heritage Landscape that have been successfully implemented in the German IBAs. These concepts make it possible to leverage strategic territorial assets, such as restoration of degraded areas, green infrastructure, water resources, ecotourism, cultural heritage and proximity agriculture.

PANEL III: TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION OF MINING 4.0 AND DIVERSIFICATION OF PRODUCTIVE CHAINS

Presentation of cases of evolution, verticalization and transformation of industrial mining and steel production chains, in order to identify new markets that may add value to existing mining and steel activities, as well as the implementation of new sectors of production of goods and services in coherence with the competences and capabilities of territories and communities;

Presentation of the importance of the development and inclusion of local competence and innovation centers (e.g. universities, research centers) in the “Just Transition” process, highlighting investment in knowledge and innovation to address economic, social and environmental issues.

PANEL IV: INFRASTRUCTURE: LOGISTIC AND ENERGY

Introduction to the need for innovative uses of existing transport and energy infrastructure in regions that are now predominantly linked to mining. The concept of Smart Logistics will be presented as a tool for implementing logistics and mobility models that support the most sustainable socioeconomic development models.

17h15 – 18h15:

FINANCING OF DEVELOPMENT FOR A JUST TRANSITION

Discussion of relevant resource allocation issues and activation of financing solutions to implement actions identified as key to implementing the “Just Transition” process;

Final remarks and introduction to the next day's workshop, where project proposals and actions to implement the “Just Transition” process in Minas Gerais will be identified.

 

 

19th MARCH 2020 | THURSDAY

WORKSHOP (closed event - only guests)

 

Bringing together local stakeholders and representatives of German entities interested in supporting the bilateral initiative and develop cooperation projects based on adapting German best practices to the Brazilian context;

Identifying innovative solutions for a “Just Transition” process in Minas Gerais through the analysis and comparison of Brazilian and German experiences;

Promoting the implementation of concrete activities that can start a “Just Transition” process in Minas Gerais with studies and high impact projects that can be accomplished in the short term (2-3 years).

 

 

9h30 – 12h45: MORNING SESSION:

 

Presentation of the vision of the stakeholders from Minas Gerais, based on the results and proposals discussed in the Conference;

 

Discussion of the potential of using the tools implemented in the German cases to promote the process of a “Just Transition” in Minas Gerais, considering their necessary adaptation to the Brazilian context.

 

14h00 – 16h30: AFTERNOON SESSION:

 

Identification of economic, technological and socio-environmental solutions for each of the pillars, based on the factors that underlie a successful process of “Just Transition”;

Definition of a bilateral cooperation agenda of activities, including the identification of pilot projects that can be implemented in the short term (2-3 years).
