1st Carioca Workshop on Optimization and Applications
Optimization, a fundamental area in applied mathematics and operations research, involves finding the best solution from a set of feasible options to maximize or minimize a particular objective function. Within machine learning, optimization techniques are crucial for training algorithms, enabling models to learn from data by minimizing loss functions and enhancing predictive accuracy. In industry, optimization plays a pivotal role in streamlining operations, reducing costs, and improving product quality, making it essential for decision-making processes across sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, energy economics, and finance. The subareas of nonlinear programming and variational analysis address complex problems where relationships between variables are not linear, allowing for more realistic modeling of real-world scenarios. Optimization on manifolds deals with problems where the constraints are geometric in nature, making it vital for applications in robotics and computer vision, where understanding the shape and structure of data is essential. Tensor methods and optimization algorithms are closely linked, as optimization techniques are essential for efficiently decomposing tensors, extracting latent patterns, and minimizing reconstruction errors. They are widely used in machine learning, signal processing, recommender systems, healthcare analytics, and scientific computing for tasks like dimensionality reduction, anomaly detection, and multi-modal data fusion. This workshop gathers specialists working in optimization for machine learning and industry, nonlinear programming, optimization on manifolds, variational analysis, tensor decompositions, and their applications. We will also offer two mini-courses for postgraduate students and postdocs (with poster presentations and a prize). We encourage the invitation of your students and postdocs for poster presentations.
