Addressing a direct demand from the Consul General of Germany in Rio de Janeiro, Mr. Klaus Zillikens, FGV Europe is promoting the Germany-Brazil bilateral cooperation initiative "Toward a Just Transition: an opportunity for Minas Gerais".
Launch event of the initiative, 28/01/2020 | Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
On January 28, 2020, the bilateral initiative was officially launched during an event at the FGV Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro. The meeting was attended by FGV President, Dr. Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, the Consul General of Germany in Rio de Janeiro, Mr. Zillikens, who is finishing his diplomatic mission in Rio de Janeiro. Just Transition Project Managers, Marco Ristuccia and Marco Contardi also participated.
On the occasion, the consul general was honored by the president of FGV with a plaque in recognition of the valuable and constructive partnership and cooperation between FGV and the German consulate general in Rio de Janeiro.
In this context, after the launch of the initiative in January 2020, FGV Europe developed a stakeholder engagement work of the State of Minas Gerais and Germany aiming for cooperation on the theme of " Just Transition ". In addition, FGV Europe generated knowledge with the elaboration of the Concept Paper "Toward a Just Transition: An Opportunity for Minas Gerais" which would have the role of supporting and guiding the dialogue between the involved parties, as well as facilitating the process of knowledge and technology transfer and adaptation within the bilateral initiative.
In February 2020, the newly appointed Consul-General of Germany in Rio de Janeiro, Mr. Dirk Augustin, also championed the initiative, allowing a complete continuation of efforts throughout its entire development.
The highlight of this bilateral technical cooperation process Brazil - Germany would be the event - consisting of a conference and workshop - that would take place on March 18 and 19, 2020 in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais.
However, due to the global pandemic scenario of COVID-19, the organizers adapted the agenda to a virtual format, turning the face-to-face event into a series of virtual events from September to Decembrer 2020. In addition, a physical event was scheduled for December in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, but, unfortunately, the health scenario did not allow it to take place. This activity was also carried out in a virtual format on December 14th and 15th.
The aim of the initiative remained intact: to foster dialogue and share knowledge on opportunities and challenges in the implementation of a sustainable and just transition in Minas Gerais, relying on the knowledge generated by the German experiences. Moreover, it looks forward to identify opportunities of cooperation between Minas Gerais and Germany to deploy projects in mining territories of Minas Gerais.
In this way, the organizers will continue their activities by setting up global sustainable development partners on the topic of " Just Transition".
Stay tuned on our virtual seminar agenda!
Hope you will be able to participate.
