• Presentation of the Concept Paper "Toward a Just Transition: An Opportunity for Minas Gerais";

• Overview of the mining-based economy in the State of Minas Gerais and the need to identify a more sustainable and diversified development model;

• Presentation of experiences of processes of transformation of the socioeconomic structure in German mining territories, in line with the concepts of Just Transition;

• Reformulation of sustainable development strategies and actions for the affected territories of the mining industry within the Just Transition approach. In particular, it is about structural change in territories and economic diversification to keep regions resilient, competitive and sustainable.

2. Regulation and Governance Models for Just Transition in the Mining Sector

• Presentation of the German “Just Transition” cases from the Ruhr Valley and Lausitz region, focusing on the experiences of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) as a long-term planning tool and the importance of creating a participatory territorial governance platform that allows stakeholders engagement (Multistakeholder Governance Model);

• Brazilian regulatory aspects regarding territorial governance models that allow to plan and manage in an agile, effective way and engage local stakeholders, or even find new solutions for institutional arrangements;

• Regulatory aspects related to sectors involved in the just transition process. In particular, there will be a focus on the mining sector concerning socio-environmental issues and the use of royalties for development purposes, among other elements involved.

3. Mining & Post Mining Sustainable Landscape

• Presentation of the relevance and potential of the recovery of degraded areas for the diversification of the economic matrix of mining territories;

• Presentation of sustainable territorial development tools such as Sustainable Landscape and Cultural Heritage Landscape that have been successfully implemented in the German IBAs. These concepts make it possible to leverage strategic territorial assets, such as restoration of degraded areas, green infrastructure, water resources, ecotourism, cultural heritage, and proximity agriculture;

• Debate on the evolution, verticalization and transformation of industrial mining production chains, in order to identify and promote new markets that may add value to existing mining activities, as well as the implementation of new sectors for the production of goods and services from the recovery of degraded areas and the enhancement of skills and vocations of territories and communities.

6. Energy Transition and Sustainable Mining

On the one hand, this transition calls for a reduction in the use of non-renewable sources, but on the other hand, the implementation of renewable sources will demand materials produced by mining activity. • Discussion on the role of relevance and the presence of Brazil in the value chains linked to technological innovation for the global energy transition;
